Irregular pool

Irregular Swimming Pool

There is much more work involved in calculating the volume of a pool like the above. This type of pool is called an irregular pool.

Before you try the method below, see if you can find out the volume from the installer or any leaflets / manuals you might have.

If you don’t have anything, try the internet to see if you can find out any details.

If not, you will need time to work out the Area of the pool (A).

Irregular Swimming Pool Diagram

It will take 4 steps.

Step 1 – measure the total length (in metres) of the pool and the total width (in metres) of the pool

Example above – length is 16 m and width is 10m

Step 2 – mark off a grid in square metres.

Example above – shown by black lines

Step 3 – count the squares which are untouched by pool and less than half “covered” by pool (shown in green)

Example above – 45 whole squares and 15 partial squares – total of 60 squares

Step 4 – work out the area of the pool

Example above – total area is 16 x 10 = 160 squares, but 60 squares are green so area of the pool must be 160 – 60 = 100 squares. As the squares are square metres then Area of pool (A) is 100 sq metres.

You will also need to know the depth (D) of the pool.

Enter your values in the boxes below, click on the “Calculate” button and it will work out how many litres of water there are in your swimming pool.

NB -
1. All measurements are in metres.
2. “litres” box is where the answer will appear – please do not try to enter any values in this box.
